What happens during the Easter Vigil?

The Easter Vigil is the highlight of the ecclesiastical year. Everything that Jesus said and did is only given meaning by his resurrection. The lighting of the Easter candle in a dark church symbolizes Jesus, our only Light. That light is passed from one person to the next, as the candles of all the faithful are lit and the entire church is illuminated by candlelight.

We read extensively from the Bible and we hear about the relationship between God and his people. People are often baptised during the Easter Vigil, and all the faithful renew their baptismal vows. The Eucharist is then celebrated with a great sense of joy because of everything that Jesus has given us.
