Political and religious debate has continued to ferment in the wake of Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin\u2019s withdrawal from a prominent Catholic award after backlash over his decades of support for pro-abortion politics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Durbin was scheduled to receive a \u201cLifetime Achievement Award for support to immigrants\u201d at a Chicago archdiocesan event in November. But criticism from numerous U.S. bishops led the senator to back out of the award ceremony<\/a> on Sept. 30.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pope Leo XIV even weighed in<\/a> on the controversy prior to Durbin\u2019s decision, seemingly coming at least partly to the senator\u2019s defense on Sept. 30 when during a press availability at Castel Gandolfo he argued that it was \u201cimportant to look at the overall work that a senator has done [during] 40 years of service in the United States Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Holy Father, a Chicago native, argued that such political disputes are \u201ccomplex.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if anyone has all the truth\u201d regarding such issues, he said, urging those who disagree with each other to \u201chave respect for one another\u201d amid debates.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Leo in that exchange argued in favor of a consistent ethic of life.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone who says I\u2019m against abortion but says \u2018I\u2019m in favor of the death penalty\u2019 is not really pro-life,\u201d the pope told journalists. \u201cSomeone who says that \u2018I\u2019m against abortion but I\u2019m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants who are in the United States,\u2019 I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s pro-life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018A hierarchy of truths\u2019<\/h2>\n

Bishop Daniel Thomas of Toledo, Ohio, the chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops\u2019 pro-life committee, argued this week that there exists a \u201chierarchy of truths\u201d regarding the sanctity of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no question that people across the board are vulnerable, but who are the most vulnerable?\u201d Thomas told OSV News<\/a>. \u201cThose are the innocent and completely vulnerable little children in the womb who cannot defend themselves.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Durbin himself, meanwhile, expressed surprise over the \u201clevel of controversy\u201d surrounding his intended receipt of the award.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The senator, who has served Illinois in the U.S. Senate since 1997 and previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives, told NBC News<\/a> that he withdrew from the award \u201cbecause the reaction has been so controversial\u201d against Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[I] see no point in going forward with that,\u201d he told the U.S. network, though he said Pope Leo\u2019s remarks were \u201camazing\u201d and that he \u201cdidn\u2019t expect\u201d the pope to seemingly come to his defense.<\/p>\n

Durbin has long been vocal in his support for abortion rights. He opposed abortion earlier in his political career but told the late Tim Russert in 2005<\/a> that he had come to change his mind on the matter, claiming that there are \u201ccertain times in the life of a woman\u201d when an abortion is necessary.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The senator was more outwardly supportive of abortion in 2022 following the repeal of Roe v. Wade when he said<\/a> that the Supreme Court had \u201celiminate[d] a federally protected constitutional right that has been the law for nearly half a century.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a result, millions of Americans are waking up in a country where they have fewer rights than their parents and grandparents,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Durbin vowed to \u201ckeep fighting to enshrine into law a woman\u2019s right to make her own reproductive choices,\u201d arguing against \u201c[letting] our children inherit a nation that is less free and more dangerous than the one their parents grew up in.<\/p>\n

The senator has received praise from pro-abortion advocates. He has regularly been awarded<\/a> a \u201c100\u201d score from the group Reproductive Freedom for All \u2014 formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America \u2014 for his years of favorable votes toward pro-abortion policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, meanwhile, gives Durbin an \u201cF\u201d award<\/a> for having \u201cconsistently voted to eliminate or prevent protections for the unborn and for children born alive after failed abortions,\u201d among other pro-abortion positions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After days of backlash, various U.S. bishops expressed relief<\/a> at Durbin\u2019s backing out of the award. Similar to Thomas, Bishop Michael Burbidge of Arlington, Virginia, said after Durbin\u2019s withdrawal that the Church\u2019s \u201cpublic witness to the Gospel\u201d requires it to \u201cshow the hierarchy and unity of all truths.\u201d<\/p>\n

In announcing Durbin\u2019s decline of the award, Cardinal Blase Cupich on Sept. 30 argued against \u201ctotal condemnation\u201d of Catholic political leaders who fail to espouse the entirety of the Church\u2019s teaching.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[A] positive approach can keep alive the hope that it is worth talking to one another \u2014 and collaborating with one another \u2014 to promote the common good,\u201d the prelate argued.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thomas, meanwhile, told OSV News this week that the \u201cpromotion of direct killing of infants in the womb\u201d is \u201ca very grave matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we have to say there is a moral hierarchy here of life,\u201d he said. \u201c[C]ertainly doing one thing or another may be wrong, but the direct killing of children in the womb is the gravest of these things.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
