{"id":26087,"date":"2025-10-10T21:07:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T19:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/explorecatholic.nl\/nieuws\/relic-that-appeared-to-move-on-its-own-not-of-supernatural-origin-diocese-says\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T11:41:30","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T10:41:30","slug":"relic-that-appeared-to-move-on-its-own-not-of-supernatural-origin-diocese-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explorecatholic.nl\/en\/news\/relic-that-appeared-to-move-on-its-own-not-of-supernatural-origin-diocese-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Relic that appeared to move on its own \u2018not of supernatural origin,\u2019 diocese says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>  <span>The relic of St. Gemma Galgani rests in the reliquary at the Newman Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025. \/ Credit: Corbin Hubbell<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p>CNA Staff, Oct 10, 2025 \/ 15:07 pm (CNA).<\/p>\n<p>The Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska, has determined that a moving relic was \u201cnot of supernatural origin\u201d after video of the apparent phenomenon spread across social media.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Sachinettiyil\/status\/1976015237699731489\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">viral video<\/a> depicted a first-class relic of St. Gemma Galgani appearing to move of its own accord behind a display case.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A relic of St. Gemma Galgani has reportedly moved within its sealed reliquary at the University of Nebraska\u2013Lincoln\u2019s Newman Center, drawing Catholics from across the state eager to witness it.<\/p>\n<p>Video: Lillian Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DngPROJScQ\">pic.twitter.com\/DngPROJScQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sachin Jose (@Sachinettiyil) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sachinettiyil\/status\/1976015237699731489?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 8, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"drag-handle\" data-drag-handle=\"true\"> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Visitors reportedly came to the Newman Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to see the apparently moving relic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But a diocesan investigation found that the source of the movement was a bent hook.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Father Caleb La Rue, the chancellor for the Diocese of Lincoln, investigated whether the moving relic could be of supernatural origin with the help of another priest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He told CNA that the Church has to look at such things with a \u201chealthy skepticism\u201d to see if there are any \u201cnatural\u201d causes of the occurrences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that these things can\u2019t happen \u2014 of course, they absolutely can,\u201d he said. \u201cGod can work in any myriad of ways.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>La Rue found that the hook was bent, causing a similar relic to move in the same way when hung on the same hook. When St. Gemma\u2019s relic was removed from the hook, it ceased moving on its own. La Rue said because of the bend in the hook, the weight of the reliquary was likely \u201cnot evenly distributed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"mx-auto\"><figcaption class=\"caption text-muted\">Artifacts are displayed in the reliquary at the Newman Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025. Credit: Corbin Hubbell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But La Rue also noted that miracles do happen and encouraged people to look for the ordinary ways God shows his presence in our lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if it\u2019s not supernatural, I think there\u2019s something that God wants all of us to take away from this experience because he either willed or permitted it to happen,\u201d La Rue said.<\/p>\n<h2>What qualifies as a miracle?<\/h2>\n<p>Church authorities investigate alleged miracles when they receive reports of them. Apparently miraculous phenomena often have to do with the Eucharist, Marian apparitions, and miracles of healing, among others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Michael O\u2019Neill, a miracle expert who developed a miracle-tracking <a href=\"http:\/\/miraclehunter.com\/\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">website<\/a> and hosts the EWTN show \u201cMiracle Hunter,\u201d told CNA that the Church \u201cwould not in modern times investigate a moving relic.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditionally, only a few types of miracles are ever investigated, specifically healing miracles, Marian apparitions, Eucharistic miracles, weeping statues or icons, and incorrupt saints,\u201d O\u2019Neill said. \u201cAnd each has their own investigative process.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>La Rue, however, noted that it\u2019s not impossible for a relic to be moving miraculously in this way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s, of course, possible. There\u2019s far more miraculous things that happen every day,\u201d La Rue said. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to prematurely begin dampening the fervor. But at the same time, the Church is cautious for a reason because she wants our attention to be on truly miraculous things.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Do miracles still occur?<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Church has documented many miracles related to healing, the Eucharist, and Marian apparitions.<\/p>\n<p>Healing miracles are especially important in the investigation of potential saints. Would-be-saints need several miraculous healings to be attributed to their intercession before the Church will canonize them.<\/p>\n<p>These healing miracles undergo a scrutinous investigation in line with what is called \u201cthe Lambertini Criteria,\u201d according to O\u2019Neill. A miracle can be confirmed only if there is no possible scientific explanation for the healing.<\/p>\n<p>The Diocese of Lincoln noted in a statement that miracles still do occur, especially the miracle of the Eucharist, where the consecrated bread and wine become Jesus\u2019 body, blood, soul, and divinity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGod surrounds us with miracles every day, with the Lord\u2019s real presence in the Blessed Sacrament being preeminent of all,\u201d the diocese said in a statement shared with CNA on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>La Rue noted that the Newman Center has all-day Eucharistic adoration, where students and staff come to pray in the presence of Jesus Christ.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entire time this was happening, there was Eucharistic exposition going on,\u201d La Rue said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the Eucharist \u201cis the ultimate sign of God\u2019s abiding presence with his people and his desire to be a part of our life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if this wasn\u2019t what some people were hoping it would be, it doesn\u2019t mean that God isn\u2019t still very active in our lives,\u201d La Rue said. \u201cSometimes we maybe just don\u2019t pay attention to the little ways in which he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Neill noted that the official norms for addressing miracles were adjusted last year, meaning that the Church doesn\u2019t explicitly declare occurrences to be supernatural, but rather uses the designation \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_ddf_doc_20240517_norme-fenomeni-soprannaturali_en.html\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">nihil obstat,<\/a>\u201d meaning \u201cnothing obstructs.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This means that the miracle has \u201csigns\u201d of the Holy Spirit and nothing \u201ccritical or risky\u201d has been detected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While nihil obstat is the highest designation a proposed miracle can receive in modern times, the Vatican, according to the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/cfaith\/documents\/rc_ddf_doc_20240517_norme-fenomeni-soprannaturali_en.html\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">norms<\/a>, can also denounce alleged miracles if the Church finds them to be concerning, not of supernatural origin, or even fraudulent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>La Rue encouraged those who had hoped for a miracle to \u201cbe mindful of the ordinary ways in which God communicates his love and his grace to us throughout the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t necessarily need to be something spectacular, but there\u2019s lots of little ways that God is constantly showing us his care for us,\u201d La Rue said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>A thriving faith community\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>La Rue, who is in residence at the Newman Center, noted that the vibrant community is growing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a place where young people are really encountering Our Lord and encountering each other and building strong friendships and lasting friendships founded on shared love of God and wanting to live a full life, a joyful life,\u201d La Rue said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>About 70 people entered the Church through the center\u2019s OCIA program last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of people who came to join the church last year who just literally just showed up \u2014 nobody went and found them,\u201d La Rue said. \u201cWe certainly have those people, but a lot of them just came on their own.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sunday Mass, he said, is \u201cstanding room only.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been able to see just the reality of young people recognizing that the world doesn\u2019t have the answers \u2014 that the things of the world aren\u2019t satisfying,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd they come here to find actual peace and love and freedom in Our Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The relic of St. Gemma Galgani rests in the reliquary at the Newman Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025. \/ Credit: Corbin Hubbell CNA Staff, Oct 10, 2025 \/ 15:07 pm (CNA).
