Pope Leo has said that the digital world \u201cposes a challenge even for the consecrated.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was speaking on the afternoon of November 26 in the Vatican\u2019s Synod Hall, in an address to roughly 160 participants in the 104th Assembly of the Union of Superiors General (USG).<\/p>\n

The gathering, entitled \u201cConnected Faith: Living Prayer in the Digital Age,\u201d is being held outside Rome from November 26 to 28.<\/p>\n

The promises of technology<\/b><\/h2>\n

In his message, the Pope stressed that \u201cit would be shortsighted to ignore the extraordinary opportunities [technology] offers for communion and mission, enabling us to reach people far away\u2014even those who, by ordinary means, struggle to come close to our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pope Leo himself recently made use of such opportunities when he connected via livestream from the Vatican with 16,000 young people attending the National Catholic Youth Conference at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, USA.<\/p>\n

The risks<\/b><\/h2>\n

This form of engagement, however, the Pope warned, can also \u201cstrongly influence\u2014 and not always for the better\u2014our way of building and maintaining relationships.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

There is a real temptation, he said, \u201cto replace actual human relationships with mere virtual connections,\u201d precisely when what is needed is \u201cpresence, patient and prolonged listening, and deep sharing of ideas and feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n

He drew again on Pope Francis\u2019s apostolic exhortation Christus vivit<\/i> to emphasize that traditional instruments of communion\u2014Chapters, Councils, Canonical Visits and formative gatherings\u2014cannot be relegated to the digital world.<\/p>\n

Pope Leo went on to caution against prioritising convenience and efficiency when pastoral care is at stake. We must resist the presumption \u201cthat we are managers of multiple services,\u201d or that we can allow ourselves to be \u201cdazzled by the spotlight of efficiency, numbed by the fumes of compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n

The danger, he said, is that \u201cwe stall, or else turn our pilgrim journey into a frantic, exhausting race, forgetful of its source and its destination.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walking together<\/b><\/h2>\n

What is essential, the Pope stressed, is walking together\u2014as a community, as brothers. Pope Leo cited Pope Francis’ encyclical Fratelli tutti<\/i>, in which he \u201cinvited us to meet one another in a \u2018we\u2019 that is stronger than a collection of small individual selves,\u201d and \u201cto discover and convey the mystique of living together.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Church, Pope Leo recalled, is \u201ca communal and historical subject of synodality,\u201d an organism in which \u201cbonds are transfigured into sacred ties, into channels of grace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Relationship with God<\/b><\/h2>\n

The relationship it is most important to cultivate, the Pope underscored, is our relationship with God. This is why \u201cprayer is fundamental in the life of every consecrated person\u201d\u2014that \u201crelational space in which the heart opens to the Lord, learning to ask and to receive with trust.\u201d<\/p>\n

In prayer, Leo XIV added, \u201cwe bear witness to who we truly are: creatures in need of everything, abandoned to the provident and benevolent hands of the Creator.\u201d<\/p>\n

Navigating between digital tools and authentic relationships\u2014\u201cbeing together to speak and to listen,\u201d in a balance of \u201clight and shadow\u201d\u2014the Pope finally urged his listeners to embrace the challenge \u201cof integrating\u00a0nova et vetera<\/i>,\u201d the new and the old, \u201cpreserving and nurturing the relationship with God and with one another, without neglecting or burying, out of laziness or fear, the new talents that the Lord places in our hands\u201d.<\/p>\n
