Life in Abundance,<\/a>\u201d was released by the Vatican on Feb. 6 on the occasion of the XXV Winter Olympic Games (Feb. 6\u201322) and the XIV Paralympic Games (March 6\u201315).<\/p>\nThe pope describes sport as more than elite competition, calling it \u201ca shared activity, open to all and salutary for both body and spirit, even becoming a universal expression of our humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
A call for an Olympic Truce<\/h2>\n
Reflecting on sport\u2019s role in peace-building, Leo recalls the ancient Greek tradition of the Olympic Truce \u2014 \u201can agreement to suspend hostilities before, during, and after the Olympic Games\u201d \u2014 so that travel and competition could proceed safely.<\/p>\n
By contrast, he warns that war \u201cresults from a radicalization of conflict and a refusal to cooperate with each other,\u201d such that \u201cthe adversary is considered a mortal enemy, to be isolated and, if possible, eliminated.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn a world thirsting for peace,\u201d he writes, \u201cI wholeheartedly encourage all nations to rediscover and respect this instrument of hope that is the Olympic Truce, a symbol and promise of a reconciled world.\u201d<\/p>\n
The human person at the center<\/h2>\n
Turning to sport\u2019s formative value, the pope anchors his reflection in Christ\u2019s words: \u201cI came that they may have life, and have it abundantly\u201d (Jn 10:10). From a Christian perspective, he writes, \u201cthe human person must always remain the focal point of sport in all its expressions, even those aiming for competitive and professional excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tennis, teamwork, and the \u2018flow experience\u2019<\/h2>\n
Using tennis as an example, the pope describes \u201ca prolonged rally\u201d as one of the sport\u2019s most enjoyable moments because \u201ceach player pushes the other to the limit of his or her skill level. The experience is exhilarating, and the two players challenge each other to improve.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also emphasizes how sport can draw people out of egocentricity, especially in team settings. Quoting Pope Francis, Leo recalls the call to athletes: \u201cBe team players \u2026 it is an opportunity to encounter and be with others, to help one another, to compete in mutual esteem and to grow in brotherhood.\u201d<\/p>\n
When team sports are \u201cnot polluted by the worship of profit,\u201d he writes, young people \u201cput themselves on the line\u201d \u2014 \u201ca tremendous educational opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Corruption, doping, and fanaticism<\/h2>\n
Leo warns that sporting values are threatened when \u201cbusiness becomes the primary or sole motivation,\u201d because decisions then cease to be rooted in \u201chuman dignity\u201d and the true good of athletes and communities.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the objective is to maximize profit,\u201d he cautions, \u201cwhat can be measured or quantified is overvalued to the detriment of the incalculable and important human dimensions: \u2018It only counts if it can be counted.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
He also warns about the \u201cdictatorship of performance,\u201d which \u201ccan lead to the use of performance-enhancing substances and other forms of dishonesty,\u201d and he underscores that \u201crejecting doping and all forms of corruption \u2026 is not merely a disciplinary issue but one that touches the very heart of sport.\u201d<\/p>\n
The pope similarly cautions against fandom becoming fanaticism, noting it can become \u201ca source of polarization that leads to verbal and physical violence,\u201d turning stadiums into places of confrontation rather than encounter.<\/p>\n
Victory, defeat, and a \u2018quasi-religious\u2019 temptation<\/h2>\n
Leo says sport educates in a unique way through the relationship between winning and losing: \u201cLosing\u2026 does not entail personal failure but can become a lesson in truth and humility.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the same time, he warns that sport can take on a \u201cquasi-religious dimension,\u201d where \u201cstadiums are perceived as secular cathedrals, matches as collective liturgies and athletes as saviors.\u201d Such \u201csacralization,\u201d he writes, can reveal a real hunger for meaning and communion, but it risks hollowing out both sport and spirituality.<\/p>\n
He also cautions against narcissism and the \u201ccult of image and performance,\u201d which can \u201cfragment\u201d the person by \u201cseparating body from mind and spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n
Saints, politics, and technology<\/h2>\n
Calling for models of integrated holiness, Leo writes: \u201cWe need to rediscover those who have combined passion for sports, sensitivity to social issues and holiness,\u201d pointing to St. Pier Giorgio Frassati as a young man who \u201cperfectly combined faith, prayer, social commitment, and sport.\u201d<\/p>\n
He warns, too, against politicizing international competitions: \u201cMajor sporting events are meant to be places of encounter and mutual admiration, not stages for the affirmation of political or ideological interests.\u201d<\/p>\n
The pope also highlights contemporary challenges from transhumanism and artificial intelligence, cautioning that performance technologies can \u201ctransform the athlete into an optimized, controlled product, enhanced beyond natural limits.\u201d<\/p>\n
A pastoral approach to sport<\/h2>\n
Finally, Leo urges local Churches to treat sport as a space for \u201cdiscernment and accompaniment,\u201d calling for pastoral initiatives that offer \u201chuman and spiritual guidance\u201d and help make sport \u201ca welcoming space\u201d for communion.<\/p>\n
He concludes by returning to the theme of \u201clife in abundance,\u201d writing: \u201cThis is not an accumulation of successes or performances but a fullness of life that integrates our bodies, relationships, and interior lives.\u201d Sport, he adds, can become \u201ca school of life,\u201d teaching that \u201cabundance does not come from victory at any cost but from sharing, from respecting others, and from the joy of walking together.\u201d<\/p>\n
