{"id":38319,"date":"2026-02-11T22:01:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T21:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/explorecatholic.nl\/nieuws\/multiple-u-s-bishops-join-call-for-notre-dame-to-rescind-appointment-of-pro-abortion-advocate\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T22:01:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T21:01:00","slug":"multiple-u-s-bishops-join-call-for-notre-dame-to-rescind-appointment-of-pro-abortion-advocate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explorecatholic.nl\/en\/nieuws\/multiple-u-s-bishops-join-call-for-notre-dame-to-rescind-appointment-of-pro-abortion-advocate\/","title":{"rendered":"Multiple U.S. bishops join call for Notre Dame to rescind appointment of pro-abortion advocate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A growing chorus of U.S. bishops on Feb. 11 called on the University of Notre Dame to rescind the controversial appointment of a pro-abortion advocate to lead one of the revered Catholic institution\u2019s academic departments. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana, Bishop Kevin Rhoades<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewtnnews.com\/world\/us\/bishop-rhoades-expresses-strong-opposition-to-pro-abortion-professor-s-appointment-at-notre-dame\"> issued a statement<\/a> criticizing the university for appointing global affairs Professor Susan Ostermann as director of the school\u2019s Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies.<\/p>\n<p>Rhoades said the school\u2019s appointment of Ostermann \u2014 in spite of her public and uncompromising support for abortion \u2014 had caused a scandal and threatened Notre Dame\u2019s Catholic identity and mission. He urged the school to rescind the nomination before it goes into effect on July 1.<\/p>\n<p>Several of Rhoades\u2019 fellow prelates subsequently joined the call for Notre Dame to reverse Ostermann\u2019s appointment. Among them was Denver Archbishop Samuel Aquila, who in a post on X thanked Rhoades for his statement and said that the school\u2019s decision \u201ctarnishes Our Lady\u2019s university and what it means to be Catholic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pray that those who can rescind this terrible appointment will do so! Pray for the conversion of hearts!\u201d the archbishop wrote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/web\/status\/2021633135981871535\">Tweet<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, Bishop Robert Barron similarly offered his \u201cstrong support\u201d for Rhoades\u2019 statement, arguing that Ostermann is \u201cnot simply \u2018pro-choice\u2019\u201d on the question of abortion. <\/p>\n<p>Rather, \u201cshe is a sharp critic of the pro-life position and those who advocate it,\u201d Barron said, pointing out that Ostermann has \u201ccharacterize[d] the anti-abortion stance as rooted in white supremacy and racism\u201d and \u201cinsinuated that the Catholic commitment to integral human development implies the support of abortion rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/web\/status\/2021613562842489042\">Tweet<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Barron said he has \u201cstrong connections to and deep affections\u201d for the university. \u201cI believe that going ahead with this appointment is repugnant to the identity and mission of that great center of Catholic learning,\u201d he wrote. <\/p>\n<p>Fort Worth, Texas, Bishop Michael Olson also offered his support for Rhoades \u201cin his carrying out of his pastoral responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/web\/status\/2021626125643088184\">Tweet<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The bishop called for prayers that the university might \u201creconsider this distressing decision.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Support for Rhoades did not just come from his brother bishops. Actress and outspoken Catholic pro-life advocate Patricia Heaton <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PatriciaHeaton\/status\/2021628930944537035\">thanked both Barron and Rhoades<\/a> for their statements on Feb. 11.<\/p>\n<p>Former U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, who was named as a Pope Leo XIII Fellow on Social Thought at the University of Dallas in 2023, also thanked Rhoades, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/danlipinski2\/status\/2021643395975065760?\">writing on X<\/a>: \u201cPublic witness is extremely powerful and must be used to point all to the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though backlash to the appointment has been growing for weeks, the university has not backed off the controversial decision. The school <a href=\"https:\/\/irishrover.net\/2026\/02\/notre-dame-maintains-support-for-ostermann-appointment\/\">told the Irish Rover<\/a> as recently as Feb. 8 that it had \u201cnot changed its position\u201d on Ostermann\u2019s leadership of the department. <\/p>\n<p>Ostermann herself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/news\/notre-dame-affirms-appointment-of-abortion-advocate-to-prominent-post\">told the National Catholic Register on Jan. 29<\/a> that her role at the school \u201cis to support the diverse research of our scholars and students, not to advance a personal political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI respect Notre Dame\u2019s institutional position on the sanctity of life at every stage,\u201d she told the Register, describing herself as \u201cinspired by the university\u2019s focus on integral human development, which calls us to promote the dignity and flourishing of every person.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A growing chorus of U.S. bishops on Feb. 11 called on the University of Notre Dame to rescind the controversial appointment of a pro-abortion advocate to lead one of the revered Catholic institution\u2019s academic departments.
