The University of Notre Dame is signaling that it will stick by its appointment of an outspoken pro-abortion advocate to lead a university institute even after bishops from around the U.S. have criticized the decision and urged the school to change course.<\/p>\n

Multiple bishops have lamented the school\u2019s decision to appoint global affairs Professor Susan Ostermann as director of the school\u2019s Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies. The school announced the appointment in January.<\/p>\n

On Feb. 11 Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana, Bishop Kevin Rhoades, whose diocesan territory includes the university, expressed \u201cdismay\u201d and \u201cstrong opposition\u201d <\/a>to the appointment and called on the school to rescind the assignment, citing Ostermann\u2019s public support for abortion.<\/p>\n

Several of Rhoades\u2019 brother bishops followed suit, commending Rhoades for his statement and similarly calling on the university to reverse course on Ostermann\u2019s appointment.<\/p>\n

Yet in a Feb. 13 statement to EWTN News, the school indicated that it would not pull Ostermann\u2019s nomination to the leadership post.<\/p>\n

Ostermann \u201cis a highly regarded political scientist and legal scholar whose insightful research on regulatory compliance … demonstrates the rigorous, interdisciplinary expertise required to lead the Liu Institute,\u201d the school said.<\/p>\n

Calling Ostermann a \u201cdeeply committed educator,\u201d the school said she is \u201cwell prepared to expand the institute\u2019s global partnerships and create impactful research opportunities that advance our dedication to serving as the preeminent global Catholic research institution.\u201d<\/p>\n

The university stressed its \u201cunwavering\u201d commitment \u201cto upholding the inherent dignity of the human person and the sanctity of life at every stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose who serve in leadership positions at Notre Dame do so with the clear understanding that their decision-making as leaders must be guided by and consistent with the university\u2019s Catholic mission,\u201d the school said.<\/p>\n

The school did not immediately respond when asked for direct confirmation that it was continuing with Ostermann\u2019s appointment to lead the Liu Institute.<\/p>\n

But its statement suggested the school is not backing down from the controversial decision, one that has brought withering criticism from both U.S. bishops and pro-life advocates and has seen the departure of at least two academics from the storied Catholic institution.<\/p>\n

Robert Gimello, a research professor emeritus of theology who is an expert on Buddhism, told the National Catholic Register<\/a> that his \u201ccontinued formal association with a unit of the university led by such a person is, for me, simply unconscionable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Diane Desierto, a professor of law and of global affairs, also told the Register that she had cut ties with the institute over the appointment.<\/p>\n

Ostermann\u2019s outspoken abortion advocacy has included instances where she has linked the pro-life movement to white supremacy and misogyny.<\/p>\n

The professor told the National Catholic Register in January<\/a> that she \u201crespect[s] Notre Dame\u2019s institutional position on the sanctity of life at every stage\u201d and described herself as \u201cinspired by the university\u2019s focus on integral human development, which calls us to promote the dignity and flourishing of every person.\u201d<\/p>\n

She told the Register that her role at the school \u201cis to support the diverse research of our scholars and students, not to advance a personal political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ostermann had no further comment beyond her earlier statement<\/a>, according to a university spokesperson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
