About two dozen couples in the Archdiocese of Boston will have their marriages \u201cbrought into the Church\u201d this year, part of a now-yearly tradition there in which husbands and wives can take part in \u201cconvalidation\u201d ceremonies. <\/p>\n

Convalidation offers civilly married husbands and wives the opportunity for a valid Catholic sacramental marriage. <\/p>\n

The Boston Archdiocese describes<\/a> the ceremony as \u201can opportunity for couples married outside of the Catholic Church to enter a marriage covenant in the Catholic tradition, be strengthened by God\u2019s grace, and be supported by his Church.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liz Cotrupi, the director of family life and ecclesial movements in the archdiocesan evangelization office, told EWTN News that this year\u2019s ceremony will be the third the archdiocese has held in as many years. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been doing it during National Marriage Week,\u201d she said. \u201cIt just so happens that this year it falls on Valentine\u2019s Day, so it\u2019s a little special.\u201d<\/p>\n

The program arose in Boston when former Regional Bishop Mark O\u2019Connell began offering convalidation ceremonies in the north region of the archdiocese over which he presided. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he became the vicar general [in 2023], he said, \u2018Hey I\u2019ve been doing this regionally in the north region and it\u2019s had some good feedback \u2014 what about doing it archdiocesan-wide?\u2019\u201d Cotrupi said. <\/p>\n

The program has grown ever since. \u201cWe\u2019ll probably have 22 to 24 couples this year,\u201d Cotrupi said. <\/p>\n

The archdiocese has advertised the ceremony in parish bulletins and on social media, she said, and the reaction has been positive. \u201cPeople are coming out of the woodwork,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

The process is similar, but not identical, to that of preparing couples for marriage. \u201cWe\u2019ve learned a lot through this process,\u201d Cotrupi said with a laugh. <\/p>\n

The archdiocesan canonical affairs office takes part in the marriage preparation, she said, while a priest helps prepare the couple directly. <\/p>\n

\u201cEach couple, it\u2019s as if they\u2019re making their vows for the very first time,\u201d she said. \u201cThey will exchange consent, answer the questions, and then exchange rings, which are blessed.\u201d <\/p>\n

The ceremony is not a full Mass, she said, but rather consists of the Liturgy of the Word, the prayers of the faithful, a blessing, and the marriage ceremony itself. <\/p>\n

The event often has all the trappings of a wedding, she said. \u201cSome brides come dressed in wedding dresses,\u201d she said. Others are dressed more casually. Some families bring their children. <\/p>\n

At times, Cotrupi said, couples forget to bring the required two witnesses to the event, in which case she and archdiocesan Family Life Consultant
Emily Elliott have often stood as witnesses. <\/p>\n

Couples are often given a gift on the day of the ceremony, she said, and afterward they often go out to dinner with family and friends to celebrate. <\/p>\n

Cotrupi said the usual administrative tasks surrounding the process, like \u201call the paperwork,\u201d can be \u201ca bit much.\u201d Still, she said, \u201cit\u2019s a joyous occasion.\u201d<\/p>\n
