U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a speech <\/a>at the Munich Security Conference (MSC) over the weekend that elicited a standing ovation and widespread accolades, including from Bishop Robert Barron of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota.<\/p>\n

In his Feb. 14 speech, Rubio said Europe and the U.S. are part of \u201cone civilization \u2014 Western civilization\u201d and are \u201cbound to one another by the deepest bonds that nations could share,\u201d including shared \u201cChristian faith, culture, heritage, language, ancestry, and the sacrifices our forefathers made together for the common civilization to which we have fallen heir.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was here in Europe where the ideas that planted the seeds of liberty that changed the world were born,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was here in Europe … which gave the world the rule of law, the universities, and the scientific revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n

To applause, Rubio said the destiny of the U.S. will \u201calways be intertwined\u201d with Europe\u2019s and \u201cthe fate of Europe will never be irrelevant to our own.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio recalled that at the first MSC meeting in 1963, \u201cthousands of years of Western civilization hung in the balance\u201d after the devastation of two world wars and before a united Europe and United States eventually \u201cprevailed\u201d against the \u201cevil empire\u201d that was the communist Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

He said that after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, it was \u201cfoolish\u201d to assume that \u201cevery nation would now be a liberal democracy\u201d and \u201cwe would now live in a world without borders where everyone became a citizen of the world\u201d thanks to the replacement of nationhood by commerce and trade.<\/p>\n

This was a mistake, he said, citing \u201cfree and unfettered trade\u201d as the reason for the deindustrialization that has taken place in the U.S. and Europe as well as the \u201crapid\u201d militarization of countries that are \u201cadversaries and rivals\u201d who have taken over \u201cour critical supply chains.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mass migration threatens \u2018cohesion of our societies\u2019<\/h2>\n

Rubio blamed the pursuit of \u201ca world without borders\u201d for the \u201cunprecedented wave of mass migration that threatens the cohesion of our societies, the continuity of our culture, and the future of our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

He called for both Europe and the U.S. to \u201cgain control of our national borders,\u201d saying enforcing immigration law is \u201cnot an expression of xenophobia or hate but rather a \u201cfundamental act of national sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the failure to do so is not just an abdication of one of our most basic duties owed to our people,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is an urgent threat to the fabric of our societies and the survival of our civilization itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also criticized what he called \u201ca climate cult\u201d that has led to the self-imposition in Europe and the U.S. of \u201cenergy policies \u2026 that are impoverishing our people, even as our competitors exploit oil and coal and natural gas and anything else \u2014 not just to power their economies but to use as leverage against our own.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said President Donald Trump refuses to see the \u201cWest\u2019s age of dominance\u201d as declining, saying that the U.S. has \u201cno interest in being polite and orderly caretakers of the West\u2019s managed decline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Rubio said the U.S. wants to \u201crevitalize\u201d its alliance with Europe and, together, \u201crenew the greatest civilization in human history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking to the future, Rubio called for the U.S. and Europe to be \u201cunapologetic in our heritage\u201d as both societies rebuild by reindustrializing, limiting immigration, and investing in military defense.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe made these mistakes together,\u201d he said, \u201cand now, together, we owe it to our people to face those facts and to move forward, to rebuild.\u201d<\/p>\n

The speech received a standing ovation.<\/p>\n

Barron\u2019s assessment<\/h2>\n

In an X pos<\/a>t following Rubio\u2019s speech, Barron said that \u201cwhat most grabbed my attention was his stress on the common culture that unites Europe and America.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barron pointed out that \u201cthat culture is grounded ultimately in the Christian faith. It is simply the case that reverence for the dignity of the individual, for human rights, for political freedom, and for equality comes, in the final analysis, from the Christian Gospel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBasic to his presentation was the conviction that Europe and America will truly flourish when each rediscovers its spiritual mooring,\u201d the bishop observed.<\/p>\n

Last week, the presidents of the Italian, French, German, and Polish bishops\u2019 conferences issued a statement<\/a> in which they also called upon Europeans to \u201creturn to the foundations of their hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cChristianity has been one of the essential foundations of our continent,\u201d they wrote, and Europe must \u201crediscover its soul in order to offer the entire world its indispensable contribution to the \u2018common good.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world needs Europe,\u201d the bishops wrote. \u201cThis is the urgency that Christians must embrace in order to then commit themselves decisively, wherever they are, to its future with the same keen awareness as the founding fathers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Munich Security Conference<\/h2>\n

The MSC was founded in 1963 and chaired until 1998 by Ewald-Heinrich von Kleist-Schmenzin, a German publisher, former Wehrmacht officer, and participant in the July 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler.<\/p>\n

The MSC is not a decision-making body but an independent venue for launching diplomatic initiatives and shaping international security policy discourse. It serves as an annual gathering for heads of state, foreign and defense ministers, military leaders, experts, and representatives from business, academia, and civil society to discuss global security challenges in an informal setting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
