U.S. Vice President JD Vance this week admitted that he could have spoken \u201cmore carefully\u201d when he suggested that American bishops were more concerned with finances than immigrants amid budget cuts in 2025.<\/p>\n

Speaking on CBS News\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation\u201d in January 2025, Vance had suggested<\/a> that the bishops who were objecting to aggressive immigration enforcement by the Trump administration should consider whether they were \u201cworried about their bottom line.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has received tens of millions of dollars in government grants for its refugee resettlement program but maintains that those grants did not cover the total cost<\/a> of the program. <\/p>\n

In February Cardinal Timothy Dolan told EWTN News\u2019 Mark Irons<\/a> that Vance had \u201capologized\u201d for the remarks. In a March 4 interview with the Washington Post,<\/a> Vance didn\u2019t deny apologizing, though according to the paper he \u201cdidn\u2019t recall exactly what he said\u201d to the prelate. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not saying he\u2019s lying, but I mean, look, sometimes I say things too harshly. I say things too directly,\u201d Vance told the newspaper. <\/p>\n

The vice president admitted he \u201ccould have made that comment more carefully without going too hard\u201d on the U.S. bishops. <\/p>\n

He told the Post that he spoke to Dolan about the need to \u201cbe careful your financial interests and the immigration issue don\u2019t actually cloud your judgment.\u201d Vance did not immediately reply to a request for comment from EWTN News on March 4. <\/p>\n

\u2018I have a different job\u2019<\/h2>\n

Vance told the Post that though he admires the Catholic Church\u2019s \u201cspirit\u201d and \u201cChristian charity,\u201d he \u201c[has] a different job\u201d than Church leadership and is obligated \u201cto make sure that the American people are as safe and prosperous as they can be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd sometimes that means that possibly very good people that the Catholic Church are ministering to, I have to say, \u2018Has that person come into our country legally?\u2019\u201d he told the paper. \u201cAnd if not, should we try to do something to change that?\u201d<\/p>\n

The vice president said he tries to manage the \u201cconflict\u201d between the Church and the government \u201cin a spirit of charity.\u201d <\/p>\n

In February Dolan told EWTN News that though he disagrees with some positions that Vance takes, \u201che\u2019s a very good guy.\u201d <\/p>\n
