The Loyola University Chicago student who was shot and killed last week was a \u201cbeautiful person\u201d and a \u201cgenuine soul,\u201d campus leaders said amid mourning over the 18-year-old\u2019s murder. <\/p>\n

Sheridan Gorman was shot and killed early on March 19 while walking with her friends near the Jesuit university\u2019s campus, officials said last week. <\/p>\n

Law enforcement has alleged that 25-year-old Jose Medina carried out the killing. Medina had reportedly been observed acting strangely in the area; witnesses said he opened fire on Gorman and her friends when they walked nearby. <\/p>\n

Medina was living in the country illegally, police said. Federal immigration officials have placed a detainer against him in order to arrest him if he is released from police custody, while local officials in Chicago are moving to prosecute him for the murder. <\/p>\n

\u2018Compassionate, selfless, kind\u2019<\/h2>\n

The Catholic university mourned the news of Gorman\u2019s passing, with leadership lamenting the loss of the New York state native who was just finishing up her freshman year there. <\/p>\n

Loyola Cru, a Christian campus ministry at the school, said in an Instagram post<\/a> that Gorman was \u201can absolute delight.\u201d <\/p>\n

The group described her as \u201ccompassionate, selfless, kind, generous, joyful, willing, and so much fun. A beautiful person and a genuine soul.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Christian student organization said it was \u201cheavy with grief\u201d but that it was \u201chold[ing] that in tension with the reality that Jesus is our refuge and shelter.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThe darkness of this world does not overshadow the light of Christ\u2019s love,\u201d the group wrote. <\/p>\n

Gorman\u2019s obituary<\/a> said she \u201cloved [her faith] fiercely\u201d along with \u201cher family, her friends, [and] her community.\u201d A native of Yorktown Heights, New York, she is survived by her mother, Jessica, and father, Thomas, as well as her sister, Madelon. <\/p>\n

A GoFundMe set up to raise money for a memorial scholarship in Gorman\u2019s honor said she \u201cloved Jesus, her family … her lifelong friends, and the simple, beautiful moments that made up her life.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cShe had a way of making everyone feel special, seen, and loved,\u201d the fundraiser said. \u201cTo know her was to be changed by her.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a letter to the school\u2019s community, university President Mark Reed described Gorman\u2019s death as a \u201ctragic loss\u201d for the school. <\/p>\n

Reed urged the school to petition St. Joseph \u201cto intercede for our grieving community and for the family of our beloved student Sheridan.\u201d The school also hosted a memorial vigil for Gorman on March 19. <\/p>\n

At an event at City Club Chicago on March 23, meanwhile, Cardinal Blase Cupich said he had spoken with Gorman\u2019s parents amid their grief.<\/p>\n
