{"id":42964,"date":"2026-03-26T22:25:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-26T21:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/explorecatholic.nl\/nieuws\/international-olympic-committee-only-biological-women-allowed-to-compete-in-womens-category\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T22:25:00","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T21:25:00","slug":"international-olympic-committee-only-biological-women-allowed-to-compete-in-womens-category","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explorecatholic.nl\/en\/nieuws\/international-olympic-committee-only-biological-women-allowed-to-compete-in-womens-category\/","title":{"rendered":"International Olympic Committee: Only \u2018biological women\u2019 allowed to compete in women\u2019s category"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced a new policy to protect women in sports, under which only \u201cbiological women\u201d \u2014 and not \u201cbiological men\u201d who self-identify as women \u2014 will be permitted to compete in the women\u2019s category.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/ioc\/news\/international-olympic-committee-announces-new-policy-on-the-protection-of-the-female-women-s-category-in-olympic-sport\">new policy<\/a>, announced on March 26, will take effect starting with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and, according to the organization\u2019s website, \u201cwill not be retroactive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kirsty Coventry, an IOC member and two-time Olympic swimming champion, stated in a video that she is \u201caware that this is a very sensitive issue\u201d and that, as a former athlete, she \u201cfirmly believes in the right of all Olympic athletes to participate in fair competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coventry emphasized that \u201cthe policy we have announced is based on science and has been developed by medical experts, taking into account \u2014 above all \u2014 the interests of the athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/web\/status\/2037153224424149149?s=20\">Tweet<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scientific evidence is very clear. Male chromosomes provide performance advantages in sports that rely on strength, power, or endurance,\u201d she underscored.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the Olympic Games, even the slightest differences can mean the difference between victory and defeat. Therefore, it is absolutely clear that it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the women\u2019s category. Furthermore, in some sports, it simply would not be safe,\u201d the IOC member said.<\/p>\n<h2>Testing of athletes<\/h2>\n<p>The IOC further indicated that Olympic athletes will be tested to detect the presence or absence of the SRY gene, which demonstrates that an athlete has undergone male sexual development \u2014 something that can be verified using a saliva or blood sample.<\/p>\n<p>Those who test negative on this test, the IOC emphasizes, \u201cpermanently meet the eligibility criteria of this policy to compete in the female category.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless there are grounds to believe that a negative result is erroneous, this test will be performed only once in a lifetime,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n<p>No athlete who tests positive will be permitted to participate in the female category, with the \u201crare exceptions\u201d of those holding a \u201cdiagnosis of Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (CAIS) or other rare differences\/disorders of sex development (DSD) who do not benefit from the anabolic and\/or performance-enhancing effects of testosterone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those who test positive \u2014 \u201cincluding androgen-sensitive XY transgender and XY-DSD athletes\u201d \u2014 may participate in the categories for which they qualify, the IOC clarifies, pointing to male or mixed categories, \u201cor in sports and events that do not classify athletes by sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This policy, the IOC explains, was guided by its objectives \u201cregarding equality (equal opportunities for female athletes in finals, on podiums, and in championships); enhancing Olympic value (including both women\u2019s and men\u2019s finals in all sports); and visibility and inspiration (celebrating female athletes on the Olympic podium to inspire and represent women and girls worldwide).\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How was this new policy developed?<\/h2>\n<p>The new policy is the result of an IOC review \u2014 conducted between September 2024 and March 2026 \u2014 of the IOC\u2019s policy objectives concerning the women\u2019s category. Within this framework, a working group was established in September 2025 to \u201cspecifically examine scientific, medical, and legal advancements made since 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The members of the working group hail from five continents and include \u201cspecialists in sports science, endocrinology, transgender medicine, sports medicine, women\u2019s health, ethics, and law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Olympic athletes also participated through more than 1,100 survey responses, in-depth individual interviews with \u201caffected athletes from around the world,\u201d and a presentation and discussion with members of the IOC Athletes\u2019 Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the consultation revealed that \u201cwhile there are nuances depending on sex, gender, region, and the athlete\u2019s status (active or retired), there was a strong consensus that fairness and safety in the women\u2019s category require clear, science-based eligibility rules, and that protecting the women\u2019s category is a shared priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>This story was first published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciprensa.com\/noticias\/123511\/comite-olimpico-internacional-solo-mujeres-biologicas-podran-competir-en-la-categoria-femenina\">ACI Prensa<\/a>, the Spanish-language sister service of EWTN News.
