{"id":45144,"date":"2026-04-11T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/explorecatholic.nl\/nieuws\/arthur-brooks-the-world-needs-american-catholicism\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T12:00:00","slug":"arthur-brooks-the-world-needs-american-catholicism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/explorecatholic.nl\/en\/nieuws\/arthur-brooks-the-world-needs-american-catholicism\/","title":{"rendered":"Arthur Brooks: \u2018The world needs American Catholicism\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now is the time to invite people to the faith, as it \u201cis the moment for the American Catholic Church,\u201d says bestselling author, Harvard professor, and renowned social scientist Arthur Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>Catholics must have \u201cthe entrepreneurial zeal to go out and get souls and to promise people what they actually deeply want,\u201d Brooks said. \u201cThis is so critically important, but the way it could fail is because we just don\u02bct have the guts for it. We don\u02bct have the stomach for it. We don\u02bct have the heart for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an April 10 interview with \u201cEWTN News In Depth,\u201d Brooks spoke about the increasing numbers of Catholics. He also shared what is driving people to the Church and how the Church can best reach new people in natural and simple ways.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nozwAtT8GCk\" title=\"Embedded content\" width=\"100%\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While there have been increasing numbers of baptisms and confirmations, Brooks said Catholics \u201ccan\u02bct just rest on our laurels,\u201d as there are still \u201ctrends largely going in the other direction with respect to people coming to church,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Pew Research Center \u201cshows us that 840 Catholics left last year for every 100 who came into the Church. These are not good statistics. But what we see that\u02bcs really encouraging is a lot of young people, especially young men, coming into the Church searching for a sense of transcendence and really looking for in-real-life community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>People want meaning, because the \u201csense of meaninglessness is characteristic of why people are feeling depression, anxiety, loneliness, addiction,\u201c Brooks said. \u201cAnd people are starting to fight back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooks said: \u201cThey\u02bcre starting to recognize that the little friend in their pocket, the supercomputer that\u02bcs their smartphone, is not doing them any favors because it\u02bcs mediating their relationship with other people and they want real-life life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need meaning, and we have these natural questions: \u2018Why am I alive? For what would I give my life? Why does my life matter?\u2019 &#8230; And we\u02bcre starting to figure out after about 15 years that you can\u02bct Google these questions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>People \u201cfeel that there\u02bcs something bigger,\u201d he said. \u201cYoung people today, they have a craving for something that\u02bcs bigger and bigger. And if we don\u02bct feed it, then we\u02bcre not feeding our sheep. Then we\u02bcre not following the teachings of Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Bring back boredom, but not \u2018in a bad way\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>In his newest book, \u201cThe Meaning of Your Life: Finding Purpose in an Age of Emptiness,\u201d Brooks discusses how he wants to bring back \u201cboredom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have actual protocols built into the Catholic Church that give us moments of peace, that give us moments of perspective that most people just don\u02bct have,\u201d he said. Catholics have prayer, Mass, and Communion that offer us these moments throughout our days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing that I do is I get up very early, then I exercise, and then I go to Mass every day,\u201d Brooks said. \u201cI\u02bcve been a daily communicant for a long time and so has my wife. And we finish the day, even when I\u02bcm on the road \u2026 we pray the rosary together on the phone before we go to sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the moments,\u201d and \u201cwhen I say boredom, I don\u02bct mean boredom in a bad way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u02bcm not casting aspersions at all. I\u02bcm talking about blank space. I\u02bcm talking about turning on the structures in the brain called the default mode network that you need to understand your life. \u2018When do I understand my life the most?\u2019 When I\u02bcm at holy Mass. \u2018When do I understand it the most?\u2019 When I\u02bcm in conversation with God,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>This time in prayer can actually benefit brain function, because \u201cyou only have access to certain parts of your brain that you need to find meaning and to love your life when you have these metaphysical experiences,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u02bcs a lot of research on this,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is not speculation. There\u02bcs a ton of neuroscience research that shows that you only have access to certain parts of your brain that you need to find meaning and to love your life when you have these metaphysical experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Evangelization should be \u2018as natural as putting on your shirt\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Brooks also discussed his personal conversion and how through simple ways of \u201cfriendship and excellence,\u201d people can invite others to the Church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was 15, I had an experience at the Shrine of Guadalupe in Mexico City on a music trip,\u201d Brooks said. \u201cI came into the Church when I was 16. I went and told my parents, \u2018I\u02bcve discovered that I\u02bcm Catholic.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI come from a good, strong, Christian background, good evangelical background. I had missionaries on both sides of the family. And my parents looked at each other and they said, \u2018I guess it\u02bcs better than drugs.\u2019 They just thought it was rebellion, but the truth is I was called to it. I really was,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As people now come to the Church the question is: \u201c\u2018Do you want to go deeper?\u2019 I have something deeper. I have something more profound. I have something that has more historical significance. I have something that has more structure. Come with me, come with me \u2026 you\u02bcre hungry and I\u02bcm going to give you real food,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u02bcs the only thing that can fill this hollowness that\u02bcs in our lives. It\u02bcs the only thing that can break us out of the simulation,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople know it in their hearts, and we just have to show that to them. We have to take them by the hand and bring them along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a professor, Brooks said he uses his role to guide students but does not force his faith and beliefs on them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell them on the first day of class at Harvard, my Catholic faith is the single most important thing in my life. And then I go on and I teach them science,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe science of human happiness is what I teach. And they look it up and they say, \u2018you know, that\u02bcs not weird. It\u02bcs not weird with him. He\u02bcs doing a good job with his life \u2026 He also has a good family life. He loves his wife a lot. He\u02bcs got kids and grandkids. That\u02bcs apostolate. That\u02bcs how apostolate actually works,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLive your life and live it right and let people see your Catholic faith and don\u02bct make it weird \u2026 Just make it as natural as putting on your shirt. That\u02bcs the deal. And that\u02bcs what I\u02bcm trying to do every day,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my students come to me in office hours, the No. 1 question they ask me is not about my paper, my term project. The No. 1 question they ask me is, \u2018How do I fall in love, stay in love, start a family?\u2019 Which, of course, the university doesn\u02bct teach them, but that\u02bcs the single most important thing in their lives,\u201d Brooks said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. 2, \u2018How do I find my faith?\u201c Brooks said. \u201dWhat do I do to find my faith? They want to be led. You know, this is what it means to be a shepherd \u2026 We all have an ability to actually influence other people. And the question is, \u2018Am I influencing other people to get them a little closer to heaven?
