A newly launched Catholic group is seeking to apply the Church\u2019s teachings to the topic of animal welfare in order to counteract the \u201cneedless suffering\u201d of animals and underscore the \u201cinherent value\u201d they hold.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe most Catholics would be surprised, as I was, to learn about the extent of preventable animal suffering in our world today,\u201d Kristin Dunn, the founder of the Saint Francis Institute for Animals, told EWTN News.<\/p>\n

The group launched in March and is promoting community outreach and parish partnerships in order to spread its message. It also offers a guided 30-day program of \u201creflections, readings, short videos, and exercises\u201d meant to introduce Catholics to the topic of animal welfare.<\/p>\n

Dunn said she began learning more about animal welfare more than a decade ago. She \u201cloved dogs,\u201d she said, but had given \u201cvery little thought to other animals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her growing awareness of the issue was bolstered by works such as Pope Francis\u2019 encyclical Laudato Si\u2019<\/em>, <\/em>which, as part of its reflections on the environment, criticized the \u201cindifference or cruelty\u201d humans often show toward animals.<\/p>\n

Dunn also pointed to Catholic writer Matthew Scully\u2019s 2003 book \u201cDominion<\/a>,\u201d which criticized \u201cthe many ways our society has turned its gaze away from animals\u201d and allowed animal suffering to flourish.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something I\u2019ve felt called to start for the past decade, since learning about the issues, realizing how connected they are to my Catholic values, and knowing that other Catholics could make a tremendous impact with increased awareness,\u201d Dunn said.<\/p>\n

The group has thus far drawn funding from small donors and has received pro-bono legal support and design assistance. Since the launch, \u201cmany Catholics have reached out sharing that they\u2019ve hoped for something like this, which has been extremely encouraging,\u201d Dunn said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Not to hurt our humble brethren\u2019<\/h2>\n

The institute is named for St. Francis of Assisi, who lived during the High Middle Ages and who became famous for his exhortations to treat animals kindly and respectfully. <\/p>\n

Catholic theologians throughout the centuries have not always evinced such concern for animals. St. Augustine, for instance, largely dismissed objections to animal suffering in part by arguing that animals are \u201cnonrational\u201d and \u201cdo not share the use of reason with us.\u201d <\/p>\n

St. Francis, on the other hand, argued strongly for including animals within the human moral framework. He famously wrote that \u201cif you have men who will exclude any of God\u2019s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them,\u201d the saint wrote, though he advised that \u201cto stop there is not enough\u201d and that we must \u201cbe of service to them wherever they require it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pope Francis echoed those sentiments in his landmark 2015 encyclical Laudato Si\u2019<\/em>. In the document he also pointed to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which, while arguing that it is \u201clegitimate to use animals for food and clothing,\u201d stipulates that it is \u201ccontrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Vatican also regularly recognizes the importance of animals within creation through a yearly blessing of the animals in St. Peter\u2019s Square.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod cherishes his creation. He cares for the animals, the plants, because these create the conditions for life to continue and flourish, especially intelligent life, the life of humankind,\u201d Cardinal Mauro Gambetti said last year<\/a> during the blessing.<\/p>\n

Many animal advocates over the centuries have opted for vegetarianism or veganism in order to avoid any use of animals for food or other materials. <\/p>\n

In the modern era, meanwhile, many consumers concerned about animal welfare have opted for \u201chumane\u201d agricultural options such as pasture-based farms rather than the intensive factory-style animal farming from which most meat comes. <\/p>\n

Dunn said the Saint Francis Institute is \u201cencouraging people to learn about factory farming, given what so many animals endure\u00a0and given the urgent need for change.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOur focus is on choosing plant-based foods to make the greatest impact for animals, and, within that, to take the first step,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Among its other outreach efforts, \u201cwe\u2019re focused on building partnerships with parishes to share practical, meaningful ways to protect God\u2019s creatures,\u201d Dunn said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe can advise on straightforward changes they can make to be more animal-friendly, coordinate talks with animal experts, provide our printed brochures, and explore other ways to work together,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Dunn said those uncertain of how to start advocating on behalf of animals should \u201clearn about who the animals are \u2014 how smart, sensitive, and gentle they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor example, most people don\u2019t know that pigs are known to be as intelligent as dogs. How can we treat them so differently?\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

She quoted Pope Francis, who in Laudato Si\u2019 <\/em>wrote that if humans \u201cfeel intimately united with all that exists, then sobriety and care will well up spontaneously.\u201d<\/p>\n

Learning about animals, Dunn said, \u201cfollows the example set by St. Francis, who saw each creature as an individual worthy of love and care.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
