President Donald Trump publicly attacked Pope Leo XIV on social media Sunday evening, calling the pontiff \u201cWEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy\u201d in a lengthy post that appeared to be reacting to the Holy Father\u02bcs recent appeals for peace and an end to war.<\/p>\n

In comments to reporters at Joint Base Andrews shortly afterward, Trump said: \u201cI don\u02bct think he\u02bcs doing a very good job. \u2026 I am not a fan of Pope Leo.\u201d He added: \u201cHe\u02bcs a very liberal person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump accused Leo of being soft on Iran and criticized the pope\u02bcs opposition to U.S. military operations. \u201cI don\u02bct want a Pope who thinks it\u02bcs OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon,\u201d the president wrote. He also criticized the pope for opposing the U.S. intervention in Venezuela that ousted President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro in January.<\/p>\n

Leo has not said Iran should possess nuclear weapons. He has called the U.S.-Israel war in Iran \u201cunjust\u201d and on April 7 called Trump\u02bcs threat to destroy an entire \u201ccivilization\u201d in Iran \u201ctruly unacceptable.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Trump also claimed credit for Leo\u02bcs election to the papacy in May 2025, writing: \u201cHe wasn\u02bct on any list to be Pope, and was only put there by the Church because he was an American.\u201d He added: \u201cIf I wasn\u02bct in the White House, Leo wouldn\u02bct be in the Vatican.\u201d<\/p>\n

The post on Truth Social came hours before Leo was scheduled to depart Monday for an 11-day trip to four African countries<\/a>, and one day after the pope presided over a globally broadcast prayer vigil for peace<\/a> at St. Peter\u02bcs Basilica.<\/p>\n

U.S. bishops’ leader: Pope ‘is not his rival’<\/h2>\n

The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said he was \u201cdisheartened\u201d by President Donald Trump\u02bcs public attack on Pope Leo XIV<\/a>, defending the pontiff as the Vicar of Christ who speaks for the Gospel and the care of souls.<\/p>\n

Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City issued a brief statement <\/a>late Sunday in response to Trump\u02bcs lengthy social media post calling the pope \u201cWEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am disheartened that the President chose to write such disparaging words about the Holy Father,\u201d Coakley said. \u201cPope Leo is not his rival; nor is the Pope a politician. He is the Vicar of Christ who speaks from the truth of the Gospel and for the care of souls.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president said he preferred the pope\u02bcs older brother, Louis Prevost, a Port Charlotte, Florida, resident who has described himself as a \u201cMAGA type.\u201d \u201cI like his brother Louis much better than I like him, because Louis is all MAGA,\u201d Trump wrote.<\/p>\n

Trump also criticized Leo for meeting April 9 with David Axelrod, a former chief strategist for President Barack Obama, calling Axelrod \u201ca LOSER from the Left.\u201d The Vatican has previously confirmed the audience but did not disclose what was discussed.<\/p>\n

Trump also posted an image that commentators said depicted him as Jesus Christ, wearing a biblical-style robe and laying hands on a bedridden man as light emanates from his fingers, while admirers look on and eagles and military jets fill the sky above an American flag.<\/p>\n

The public clash comes after weeks of growing friction between the White House and Catholic leaders since the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran on Feb. 28<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Pope Leo\u02bcs appeals for peace intensified over Holy Week, culminating in Saturday\u02bcs vigil, where he denounced a \u201cdelusion of omnipotence\u201d and warned that \u201cthe holy Name of God\u201d was being \u201cdragged into discourses of death.\u201d<\/p>\n

At a special Mass for Peace held in Washington on April 11, Cardinal Robert McElroy argued that the current war fails to meet the strict criteria of just war theory, particularly in light of civilian suffering and the risk of disproportionate harm.<\/p>\n

The Vatican has not yet publicly responded to Trump\u02bcs post. The pope is expected to arrive in Algiers on Monday.<\/p>\n
