a statement<\/a> published on the Archdiocese of Marseille’s website following another day of clashes and confrontations in the capital and other French cities on Saturday, 17 October.\u00a0<\/p>\n‘Our country deserves better’<\/h2>\n
\u201cUnacceptable violence\u201d is how Cardinal Aveline described the situation, which resembles urban warfare and has alarmed France for several days.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn the sidelines of planned demonstrations, shops were looted, churches broken into, the town hall stormed and vandalised, a police station ransacked, and members of the security forces attacked,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
On behalf of the Church in Marseille, he expressed \u201csupport and solidarity with those who have been injured and with the shopkeepers who have fallen victim to these acts of vandalism.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Cardinal also urged people to pray for the clashes to end as soon as possible and for peace to be restored.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur city and our country deserve better than this,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the local prefecture has banned demonstrations in the city between noon and 8 p.m. on 19 October.<\/p>\n
Lyon\u2019s Archbishop: Facing society\u2019s challenges together<\/h2>\n
Lyon\u2019s Archbishop Olivier de Germay expressed similar sentiments in a post on X, voicing his solidarity with \u201cshopkeepers, law enforcement officers and all those who have been victims of these excesses,\u201d including \u201cthose who wanted to demonstrate peacefully.\u201d<\/p>\n
The violence that erupted on Saturday in the capital of the Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes region, he added, \u201cgoes far beyond the bounds of a demonstration in which legitimate grievances can be expressed.\u201d<\/p>\n
The city, the Archbishop said, had been the scene of \u201cunacceptable clashes, hatred, destruction and looting.\u201d<\/p>\n
The protests must not be ignored, he explained, as \u201cthis violence, too, is a sign of a society in distress.\u201d However, violence is not the way to make grievances heard.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a dead end and can only lead to further injustice and division. We will face the challenges confronting our society not by turning against one another, but by standing together,\u201d\u00a0Archbishop de Germay stressed.<\/p>\n
He urged people to pray \u201cfor peace\u201d and to become \u201cpeacemakers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Weekend failures<\/h2>\n
The French government has accepted responsibility for the events. \u201cThis weekend, we undeniably failed,\u201d Justice Minister G\u00e9rald Darmanin said, expressing his support for Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez\u2014despite the shortcomings in maintaining public order.<\/p>\n
Nu\u00f1ez, who admitted that the authorities had \u201clost control of the crowds in several cities\u201d, submitted his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron, but it was rejected.<\/p>\n
In an address to the nation on Sunday evening, Macron spoke of \u201canger and shame,\u201d while acknowledging the anxieties of students. He called on political forces to show \u201cunity\u201d and vowed to take a firm stance against those responsible for the violence. \u201cThose who destroyed must pay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The scale of the damage is becoming increasingly clear. Alain Di Crescenzo, president of the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry network (CCI France), told RTL radio that \u201cmore than 2,000\u201d shops and businesses had been vandalised, estimating the losses at \u201chundreds of millions of euros.\u201d<\/p>\n
New demonstrations for Saturday<\/h2>\n
Protests continued on the morning of 19 October. The entrance to the Louvre, the world\u2019s most visited museum, in the heart of Paris, was blocked by demonstrators expressing support for the high school students\u2019 movement, according to the museum\u2019s management and trade unions, as reported by Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n
Further looting and violence took place in the capital on Sunday and overnight, with at least 30 shops targeted. A total of 351 people were detained in recent hours.<\/p>\n
The latest measures have brought the number of people detained since the unrest began to 2,331\u2014dozens of whom have been placed in pre-trial detention.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Yellow Vests coordination group behind the 17 October mobilisation has announced a \u201csecond act\u201d of protests for Saturday, 24 October.<\/p>\n
