During his earthly life, Jesus chose twelve disciples or Apostles whom he sent out into the world to help people and to proclaim Jesus’ message to them, the Gospel. Indeed, the word ‘apostle’ means ‘he who is sent’.
After Jesus’ death and resurrection, the Apostles continued their work. The Apostles passed the ministry they had received from Jesus on to their successors, whom we call bishops. The bishops of today are the successors of the Apostles, through a long line of predecessors.
